VoIP Frequently Asked Questions (F.A.Q.'s)
1. Can I use my own server?
Positive E Solutions Inc. provides both the server and telephony hardware, on which we install your open source or Digium software we use only servers which have been tested with Asterisk and Digium hardware. To ensure the highest quality possible we install and test all hardware and software in our pc lab prior to shipment. This allows for a plug and play type installation of a custom pre-programmed and fully functional phone system right out of the box.
2. Is there a warranty on the hardware?
Yes. All equipment provided by Positive E Solutions Inc. comes with an Enhanced 1 year warranty in addition to the manufactures warranty on new equipment. Software warranties are covered by the license of the software installed.
3. Can I use an existing VoIP phone?
Most SIP or IAX protocol phones will work with Asterisk. If you are unsure of the protocol your existing phones use, we can help you determine whether your current VoIP phones will work and what limitations my apply.
4. Can I connect multiple Asterisk Servers at different sites together?
Yes, the most common use for this would be linking phone systems in different locations with separate telephone service providers. When in place, users may call, intercom, and page between sites using only internal extension numbers and answers calls from each location Phone lines may also be shared between sites allowing for Least Cost Routing of calls.
5. Can I use my existing Vonage lines?
Yes, Your Vonage line works just like a normal analog phone line and can connect to the server thru a Digium FXO line card. We recommend moving your phone numbers to a VoIP phone service provider that supports the SIP or IAX protocol to eliminate unnecessary hardware.
6. Will Asterisk work with my existing phone system?
Yes, Asterisk Systems can work in conjunction with an existing phone system. A common use would be to add offsite VoIP extensions to a traditional PBX phone system, or add VoIP service to a traditional PBX phone system. See Asterisk Setup Examples .
7. What happens if I my Internet service goes down?
The loss of function would depend upon how you use the system. Any phones outside the office would cease to work as well as any other offsite VoIP connections. Calls coming over traditional phone service would still reach the Asterisk PBX and any phones on the same local network would function without interruption. Most VoIP phone service providers will also allow for forwarding calls to another phone number during a lost connection. We recommend you have at least one backup analog line for backup and 911 service.
8. Do I need an Internet connection for my Asterisk phone system to work?
No, Asterisk can work on an existing local network without an internet connection. However a high speed Internet connection is required for offsite VoIP phone service, external VoIP phones, and remote support/maintenance/backup.
9. Will 911 emergency calling work on Asterisk?
If you have analog phones line or a T1/PRI 911 works as it always has. If you have VoIP phone service this is dependent upon the service provider, many will have you verify an address for their 911 records and verify that you understand you will have no access to 911 if your Internet connection is lost. We recommend having at least one analog backup line.
10. Can I use any phone on Asterisk?
Any analog phone may be used with Asterisk and a Digium FXS card or Grandstream analog gateway. VoIP phones must be SIP or IAX protocol. Contact a Positive E Solutions Inc. representative for more information.

Maybe, please confirm that your router supports QOS (Quality of service) for Voice packet’s and your building cabling meets industry standards/. Contact us for more information.

15. What if I don't have an existing computer network?
Don't worry; we can help you engineer a suitable network. Contact a Positive E Solutions Inc. representative for more information.
16. Where does the Asterisk server go?
The Asterisk server is usually installed near your office/building wiring. This is also usually where all networking equipment is installed. Ensure there is enough room for the Server. All hardware should be on a dedicated uninterruptible power supply which should have it's own dedicated circuit. The room should be approximately 72 degrees and free of dirt, dust and any moisture.
17. What type of wiring will my office need for Asterisk?
For VoIP phones a single CAT5e cable connected to a port on your network switch or router is required. For analog phones a single pair or wires on a cat3 cable will suffice, CAT5e may also be used. Analog lines should be jacked and labeled allowing for them to be patched into the system using ordinary line cords. T1/PRI Line should have been jacked by the carrier and can be patched in using a standard CAT5e patch cable.
